halfway home - Thursday, February 17 2005

on HK Island right now, back from Macau last night after spending the 11-16 hurtling through China's Guangdong province. it's been pretty much non-stop since i've been here, and i'm sure a massive "trip-log" post will be in order when i get home in March. but, having just passed the midway mark on this voyage, i feel i need to share one question that i have concerning what i've observed of chinese culture so far:

why do chinese people take such care in covering their mouths with one hand while using toothpicks, but have no shame when it comes to vigorously harassing their proboscis in public?

parents (well, mostly my mom) have been abuzz lately w/ talk of me going back to HK. yeesh, they seem more excited than i am?? i guess for some odd reason they keep anticipating me getting into "difficulties" when i'm there? either that, or they're worried i'll get lost (which, after the incident on the mountain, i'm sure is bound to happen anyway), get hassled by authorities, not dress warmly enough, keeps telling me i'd better not go spitting on the street, get mugged, etc...

but yeh, it's kinda funny. they've been "coordinating" w/ friends/relatives over there, figuring out who's gonna "take care" of me when & where. after reading a few emails tonight she looks over from the computer n goes:

ma: ok...when ur in HK (Island) - uncle Tyrone's (her older brother) gonna take care of u. in Kowloon City - Clarence (my older cousin) can show u around. when near Cheung Chau (Island) - it's up to auntie Helen (mom's old friend) and Junky (her friend's son about my age. i dubbed him "Junky" not b/c of unknown substances in his circulatory system, but b/c it sounds like his chinese name. it was easier to introduce him that way when he was in Canada than w/ his real english name, which happens to be "Epaphras") to keep track of you. and if ur ever lost in the city somewhere - call uncle Jeremy (her younger brother) any time 24rs.

me: (laughing) wow, really? am i going to have my own satellite while i'm there too? and what if...

ma: o yes. and if you're stuck at the police station - then you'll have to phone uncle chung (Junky's dad) to handle that.


this trip sounds like fun already! =P

(i got an uncle named Tyrone. how cool is that?)

ever notice u can get the weirdest thoughts in ur head in those moments when ur lying in bed, either half-asleep or half-awake? happened to me this morning. bobo was yappin' away, so i woke up (sorta). lying in bed, for some reason (maybe b/c of the fact i'm going to HK soon) i imagined the following scenario...

some dude walks up to me n says: "hey, are u CBC?"

i look at him n go: "huh?"

dude: "u know, are u a CBC? Canadian Born Chinese?"

me: "ooooh. dude, i thought u were talking about Channel 3 on TV or somethin. yeah i was born here..."


so that was the end of that mental "skit", but my mind kept on going. it's coincidence that the term for Canadian Born Chinese has the same abbreviated form as a TV station (the same applies to the American Born Chinese too), but what about other TV stations? would it work? so i started thinking... by the time i finally decided to get up n have breakfast, i'd only come up w/ 3 new (new to me at least) descriptors (NBC, CTV, & ESPN). here's a list of the few abbreviated channels i know (i don't watch much TV so maybe i'm missing a few possibilities) & the existing corresponding racial/cultural references:

CBC - Canadian Born Chinese
ABC - American Born Chinese
MTV - ______________?
YTV - ______________?
NBC - Nigga Born Chinese (Chinese who dress/act/wanna be black)
CTV - Chinese Turned Vietnamese (dirty Chinese)
VTV - ______________?
TSN - ______________?
ESPN - East Side Psycho Nammers (pretty self-explanatory)
HBO - ______________?

get those creative cultural juices flowing...help fill-in the blanks! (yeah, i come up w/ some weird s#*% sometimes huh?)

well, nearly done reading the 1st book in the "trilogy of five" that is the HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy. the way i see it, ppl will either get super frustrated/confused/pissed off trying to read it, or they'll see it for what it is and like it. the humour is subtle (at least i think), not the "laugh out loud" kind, but more of the "crooked grin", "silent smirk" variety. the reason i think it may frustrate/bore some readers is b/c they'll often (very often) be taken on tangents that are quite irrelevant (or seem irrelevant at the time), dragged through a few lines of giggling gibberish, and/or get narratively spun around 258.3 degrees and not end up right where they didn't start.

u get all that? =P yeh, that's the kind of read this is. "mental gymnastics" combined w/ "logical yoga". it prbbly wouldn't be as confusing if one read straight through it in one sitting, but if u do it like i did (reading a few chapters one night, then maybe skipping a few days before trying to pick up where i left off) then yeh, you'll find it that much more interesting.

midnight madness - Tuesday, February 1 2005

(this actlly happened late monday night/early tuesday morning)

went to use up the last day of my free week pass @ Gold's gym on monday night, swung by Superstore to grab some milk (but they were !closed!) doh! no matter, steered over to Starbuck's to grab a quick frap to go before heading home around 2300. quick shower, then, starving from the workout, made myself a croissant w/ chicken breast, tomatoes, cucumbers, and cheese (no mayo, i'm trying here!) & toasted it. (mmm...toasted tastes better) everything was fine n dandy...so after a bit i decided to sleep...

...but i can't. around 0200 i can't stand it n i have to take a trip to.........the kitchen. i know there's some leftover congee in the fridge...and i find it - yess!! i joyfully scoop some into a bowl & pop it in the microwave. 1 & a half minutes later: !beep!x3 err, actually it was more like !doot!x3, bit neway...it was done! now this is where haste/impatience & stupidity become partners in producing tragedy. i was still half-asleep (more or less), the congee was steaming & so the bowl was bloody hot, but in my eagerness i must've left my good friend "common sense" behind...

i limped back to my room & went to bed a very hungry, very sad, sad man...

this'll be the last post before i head to HK, so have a Happy Chinese New Year everyone. (go blow stuff up. eat lotsa food, make some money. go dance w/ a dragon/lion. and don't forget to wipe.)

ok, so i lied. i had to make note of this; i haven't cooked for my parents since i've been back, and i wasn't really planning on doing it (although the idea did occur to me) anytime soon. so, my mom decided to give me a nudge in the right direction when she came home from work later than usual n hollered at me to help her w/ "stuff" from the car. i was upstairs sleeping on the couch w/ bobo when she got home, so both me & seefutjai jumped off the couch & ran/scampered down to the car & see what was going on. (FYI: i don't scamper, bobo does)

saw a bunch of grocery bags in the back seat, so i grab 'em n help ma haul them upstairs (while bobo sniffs around @ the chocolate covered almonds scattered all over the place b/c my mom couldn't wait till she got home to open the bag & while eating them in the car, spilled 3/4 of 'em onto the passenger's side of the car)

i start emptying out the bags: canned goods, milk, carton of eggs, some rawhide sticks for bobo, oooh hello? salmon? beef?

me: oooh...is this stuff for dinner tonight? mmm, looks like it's gonna be good...

ma: yup. get to work.

of course, i was more than happy to. they deserve it, and hey not just once in a while, i should've done this a long time ago. of course i've always helped out around the house (dishes, cleaning, garbage, etc...), but i've strayed away from the stove for too long. so, before i fly away over the Pacific, one last gift:
